Four young graduates made the crazy bet that they could sail around the world without producing any waste. They left last November, and Devoteam decided to sponsor the association Sailing for Change in this project.
Every year, almost 4 billion tons of waste are produced worldwide. The majority pollutes the land and especially the oceans. Today, there are over 270,000 tons of plastic waste in our oceans and over 5 billion bits of waste (source: PLOS ONE, December 2015). That is why the crew looked at the circular economy, which aims to eliminate waste by transforming it into resources.
The members of Sailing for Change, aged 26 and 27 and graduates from engineering and business schools, embarked on this adventure with 3 objectives:
- Optimize each step to minimize waste,
- Contribute to research on marine pollution, participate in the development of environmental equipment and present their actions to a wide public,
- Uncover the damage caused by the waste and also show that there are solutions, some already effective!
Devoteam wanted to associate with this project in the continuity of the Devogame. Remember, our partner was Surfrider Foundation, another sponsor of our 4 sailors. What’s more, we have common objectives: to raise awareness of the eco-responsibility of the oceans and to find solutions to eradicate ocean pollution.
