Introduction
Sustainability plays a critical role in today’s business world, and managing sustainable efforts effectively has never been more important. The Fruggr platform offers businesses a powerful solution to tackle this growing challenge. Many people underestimate the size of the digital footprint. While consumers might think it’s limited to their mobile phones, laptops, or home heating systems, it encompasses much more. Cloud storage, servers, and the vast infrastructure required to deliver information also contribute significantly to environmental impact.
Businesses, in particular, create much larger digital footprints. When we consider mobile devices, IoT, servers, and computers, the environmental impact becomes even more significant. Additionally, when you factor in water consumption, vehicle use, waste, and carbon emissions, the overall environmental toll grows exponentially. Therefore, organisations must begin exploring ways to become more sustainable, green, and eventually achieve net-zero emissions in the near future.
This is where the Fruggr platform steps in.
Fruggr, a software solution developed in France, enables companies to measure their carbon and social footprints, as well as digital accessibility, in accordance with ESG standards. It provides a way for IT and ESG managers to track sustainability efforts and make informed decisions. With the Fruggr platform, businesses can monitor their energy consumption, track carbon footprints, reduce waste, and even promote sustainable procurement.
What is Fruggr platform?
At its core, the Fruggr platform collects data on your company’s energy use, waste generation, water consumption, and other sustainability metrics. It gathers this data from multiple sources, including energy meters, IoT sensors, and utility bills. After collecting the data, Fruggr processes and analyses it using algorithms that identify trends and patterns in environmental impact.
Fruggr also equips organisations with tools to manage their sustainability efforts efficiently. For example, the platform allows businesses to set sustainability goals and track their progress over time. Furthermore, Fruggr provides tools for reducing energy consumption, minimising waste, and promoting sustainable procurement practices.
How does Fruggr platform work?
Fruggr generates detailed reports that analyse your company’s sustainability performance. These reports can be customised to meet your specific needs, covering data on energy use, carbon emissions, waste production, water consumption, and more.
In addition, the Fruggr platform utilises a certificate rating grid, which assigns both a letter and number grade to indicate your sustainability score. This rating is based on three dimensions: Environment, Social, and Sufficiency. Let’s dive deeper into each.
Environment
Starting with the environment, the section is broken down into categories such as carbon emissions, water consumption, and energy use. All values are measured over a full year to determine a score.
To assess carbon emissions, greenhouse gases (GHG) are monitored. Fruggr evaluates the environmental impact for terminals, networks, and servers in a differentiated manner. Even the Fruggr home page measures personal impact in g/CO2 produced while browsing.
Water usage, often challenging to quantify for digital technology, is factored into the assessment. Water is primarily used during the manufacturing phase of terminals and server CPUs, especially in the extraction of rare earth metals like gold, lithium, and copper. However, Fruggr also considers the water needed to cool data centre equipment.
Energy consumption is measured at three different stages: manufacturing, digital services, and networks (including servers and digital infrastructure). This method ensures the correct magnitude is used to evaluate the product’s life cycle.
Social
In the Social domain, IT departments are encouraged to care as much about the environment as they do about their colleagues. Fruggr adds to the environmental analysis by incorporating a social score determined by Accessibility, Ethics, and Inclusion.
Accessibility is scored based on compliance with international rules, such as the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), ensuring information is accessible to everyone. Fruggr consolidates a dynamic score for all website pages, not just a sample.
Ethics are evaluated by transparency in data management and protection. Since personal data security is a global duty, more secure sites result in higher ethical scores. Fruggr analyses application code, and the two main data protection indicators include security and reliability.
Inclusion focuses on the compatibility of digital services across all devices. The greater the number of compatible browsers, the more widely a service can be accessed. This is crucial in combating obsolescence, which directly impacts environmental sustainability.
Sufficiency
The final dimension, Sufficiency or Sobriety, addresses Governance in ESG. Measuring sufficiency can be difficult to do automatically. Fruggr considers environmental and social impacts that may not be part of the overall sufficiency strategy. Sufficiency encompasses Technical, Functional, and Design aspects.
To measure Technical Sobriety, the maintainability and scalability of a solution are evaluated. Frugality is key to improving this score. Fruggr analyses terminal code size to determine compliance with the best development practices, while a performance score consolidates the average of all pages reviewed.
Functional Sobriety is assessed based on simplicity, compatibility, and accessibility for end users, regardless of their equipment. Fruggr uses the 3U rule to evaluate each function: Usefulness, Usability, and Use. Simplifying user flow may reduce the number of features offered, thus lessening the environmental impact associated with developing and using those features.
Design Sufficiency evaluates the ratio between the weight of images, videos, and text, compared to the weight of the containers. The layout and placement of content on the website are also considered.
Why You Need To Be Using Fruggr platform
The Fruggr platform is one of the most effective tools available for companies aiming to reduce their environmental impact and become B Corp Certified.
As the world shifts toward net-zero emissions, inclusion, and accessibility, tools like Fruggr will be essential for companies seeking to reduce their environmental impact, improve accessibility for employees and clients, and maintain sufficiency for years to come.
Additionally, monitoring your digital footprint through the Fruggr platform can enhance your application’s performance by improving key performance indicators (KPIs) and enabling continuous optimisation in the following areas:
- Loading performance optimisation
- Bounce rate reduction (leading to increased traffic and business)
- Hosting optimisation (through weight and page number reduction)
- Data improvement (by mastering queries)
- Security alerts (via code review)
Your firm’s digital footprint can be easily monitored and configured within the platform, providing your ESG and IT managers with the KPIs necessary to create a greener future, make better choices, and reduce costs.
