Introducing Alex: Driving Infrastructure Migration to Google Cloud for Enhanced Customer Solutions at Devoteam
Hello, my name is Alex, and I am currently employed at Devoteam for one year. Initially, my experience mainly revolved around data analysis. However, I have recently shifted my focus towards developing my skills in the technical domain, which includes infrastructure engineering.
At present, my responsibilities primarily involve managing the migration of infrastructure to the Google Cloud platform. This migration process enables our customers to access rapid and scalable solutions, enhancing their overall experience with our services.
Why Cloud Data Engineering?
I worked in data analysis for almost four years. I like to develop the product and make it comfortable for users. But at some point, I realised that improving my technical skills could give me more opportunities to solve new challenges.
Cloud technology allows me not to be tied to a specific location, and allows me to work for a large international company like Devoteam.
What does a typical day look like for a Data Engineer at Devoteam G Cloud?
In the current project, my main work is comprised of distinct tasks that require me to understand their functionality, identify system differences, and implement necessary modifications. While these edits may not always be straightforward, our well-organized communication channels enable me to optimize my time for task completion.
However, migrating infrastructure presents its own set of challenges. It is not sufficient to simply perform individual tasks; I must also ensure that my solutions seamlessly integrate with other components of the system. Despite not having management responsibilities, a significant portion of my day, approximately two to five hours, is dedicated to communications.
From Cloudera to GCP: one of the EU’s largest infrastructure migrations draws to a close, unleashing automation opportunities
I am currently in the process of migrating our client’s infrastructure from Cloudera to Google Cloud. This is one of the largest migrations in the EU and has been ongoing for over a year. However, our work is nearing completion, and I have made significant contributions to its progress. Throughout the project, we have encountered several hundred similar tasks, presenting excellent opportunities for me to automate our changes.
How would you describe your Tribe team? How do you move together?
It’s one of the best teams I’ve ever worked with. I have worked on different projects, but Devoteam has the best workflow organisation of all my previous experiences. It helps people discover their strengths – we have strong technicians as well as people who are good at communication. For example, I now work with a great manager who allows me to focus on my tasks, taking a lot of the interactions to herself.
In addition, I have the opportunity to develop in the areas that interest me. Data engineering is a broad field where you can’t be an expert in everything, but Devoteam provides great opportunities for learning.
What is the best thing about your job?
I can see the value I bring, and I excel at this job more than any other.
Greatest moment as a G Clouder?
That was probably when I realised that my skills were sufficient for the tasks at hand. I have a good background, but before that, I worked in another field, which was closer to business than development. Because of that, I was afraid it would take longer to learn than it actually did.
What advice would you give to someone who is aspiring to become a Data Engineer at Devoteam G Cloud or in general?
Focus on your role and its customer-centric impact. Embrace the phrase “the best code is the one that hasn’t been written.” A valuable employee isn’t compensated solely based on a long list of technologies on their resume, but rather for their problem-solving abilities. However, it’s essential to remember that a broad perspective and deep knowledge enable faster and more effective issue resolution.
Alex’s journey as a Data Engineer at Devoteam G Cloud showcases the power of a customer-centric approach, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to continuous learning.
