In this article, we delve into Arturo’s journey as a Senior Data engineer in Belgium and the challenges he faces in his role.
Meet Arturo, a talented senior data engineer at Devoteam G Cloud.
Graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2016 in Venezuela, Arturo started his journey as a software engineer. But when a job opportunity presented itself at Devoteam G Cloud in Belgium, Arturo seized the chance to expand his career and take on a new challenge.
A Journey from Venezuela to Belgium as a Data Engineer
Arturo’s journey as a data engineer is a story of determination and a love for data engineering. “After graduation in Venezuela, I moved to the Dominican Republic where I worked for 4 years before making the move to Brussels in search of new opportunities. I was looking to expand my career and take on new challenges.
I stumbled upon a Devoteam G Cloud’s job posting on a job board and decided to apply. I was pleasantly surprised by the interview process. Despite the added challenge of a virtual interview due to timezone differences, I was still enthusiastic about the role.
His story explained in a short video
In this video, you’ll get a glimpse into Arturo’s professional journey, his role at Devoteam G Cloud, and the exciting projects he’s been a part of.
Belgium Bound: Joining the Data Tribe
Integrating into a new environment can be challenging, but I quickly connected with the G Cloud Team in Belgium. I felt welcomed right away. Migrating to a new place and company can sometimes be difficult, but I’ve never felt like an outsider. The G Clouders are friendly and fun. It’s a warm and welcoming group that thrives on collaboration. We learn a lot from each other, extending beyond our own team.
Overall, it’s a great atmosphere to be in, and I’m grateful to be part of such a dynamic and collaborative team.
What Does a Senior Data Engineer Do?
As a Senior Data Engineer, my main responsibility is ensuring projects run smoothly. I keep everyone informed and go beyond simply completing tasks and monitoring Jira. I have a high level of autonomy, and the key to success is keeping everything moving forward.
The Best Part of the Job
The opportunities for continuous learning and growth are unmatched. I value the dynamic and collaborative environment. We not only absorb information but actively contribute to each other’s growth. Sharing experiences and discussing project difficulties fosters a sense of community and prevents stagnation.
Challenges Faced
One of the biggest challenges is balancing speed with quality. Our projects often require improving existing processes quickly. This was the case with the RBFA project. I had to learn the architecture and make necessary fixes. Devoteam G Cloud has been working on this project for a long time, and it takes time to get up to speed as a new consultant.
We tackled this challenge by documenting our work on a Confluence page. Every new feature brought the added challenge of documentation. I’m proud of our progress on this project.
Overcoming Challenges and Growing Expertise
Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Instead of just reacting to problems, I focus on using cloud tools and following best practices. This helps me improve my skills and become a better engineer.
A Day in the Life
My days vary, but here’s an example of what I might do:
- Plan tasks for the day.
- Attend short meetings to stay aligned with the team.
- Assign priorities and discuss urgent needs with customers.
- Focus on building features for projects:
- Building a feature store for Vertex AI.
- Debugging and fixing bugs in RBFA.
- Creating a data warehouse structure in BigQuery.
- Giving Looker workshops to customers.
Crushing Deadlines & Making Dreams Come True
My first big challenge was the Unifiedpost project. This massive project had ambitious goals: build a data mart in less than a month – a task that typically takes six months. We leveraged technologies like Airflow, BigQuery, our Flycs accelerator, and GKE to orchestrate the process.
It was intense, as there were only two of us. We had to build the data mart quickly by grabbing data from different sources, processing it, and making it available in a data warehouse. But we did it! We completed the project in just over four weeks. The customer was thrilled, and we were proud of our speedy and effective work.
Collaboration & Fun within the Tribe
The Tribe team is a large, talented, motivated, and fun group. We encourage learning and knowledge sharing. Whether through team meetings, documentation, or informal discussions, continuous learning is key to our success.
